Riga: More than worth a trip

21.10.2023 - Natalie
To be honest, travelling to Latvia for the first time was never really an issue for Jonas and me; not because we didn't find it exciting, but because we simply hadn't really thought about it. But when the World Athletics Federation awarded the World Road Running Championships to Riga, the interest among us and our teammates was equally high. A few months later, we, almost 20 Roadrunners Südbaden, found ourselves in the Latvian capital, which had much more to offer than the World Championship races.

In and around the beautiful old town there are numerous nice corners, museums, etc., all inviting to be explored. For those interested in politics and history, we can highly recommend the KGB Museum, including the 60-minute guided tour. Also worth a visit is the modernly designed Occupation Museum, which deals with the occupation of Latvia by the Nazis and the Soviets in an interesting way. On a nice day, it's also worth going up to Riga's St. Peter's Church to survey Riga's red rooftops, the Daugava River with its bridges and the TV tower visible in the distance from the city's highest church tower.

In search of local food, we have two absolute top tips. The Lido restaurant chain offers remarkable choices at a fair price. Meanwhile, a convivial evening can be spent in the rustic vaults of the "Folksklubs Ala Pagrabs" restaurant.

For us, it is clear that our first trip to the Latvian capital was not our last. The city centre in particular was far too beautiful, the history of this small country far too exciting and the streets far too fast. We will be back. Sometime.
